That graphic designer Ryszard Bienert and photographer Andrzej Grabowski make a great team is more than evident in this publication. The pair have been working with and for Poznań’s Polski Teatr Tańca (The Polish Dance Theater) for many years, a fact that may partly explain the success of their
many award-winning books.
Żywy Zapis is a sophisticated publication comprising two volumes housed in a screen-printed cardboard slipcase. The first features a collection of photographs, each presented in a large format that effectively captures the dynamic essence of movement and dance. The judicious use of varying
ayouts and of repetitions enhances the visual impact, allowing the images to convey the fluidity and energy inherent in the subject matter. The second contains the accompanying texts, which are carefully separated to provide an optimal reading experience. Its elongated vertical type area fits particularly
well with the content, making for a comfortable and engaging read. This design choice ensures the textual elements complement the visual narratives, creating a harmonious interplay between the two. The exceptional quality of the printing is evident throughout both volumes, with meticulous attention
to detail that enhances the aesthetic and tactile experience. The combination of high-quality materials and thoughtful design choices makes Żywy Zapis a remarkable work, both in form and content. It also demonstrates just how beautifully designed and produced an anniversary publication can be. The book itself seems to dance in the reader’s hands; printed on the edges are silhouettes of dancers that come to life as you leaf through the pages.
