This book is presented in the form of a compilation documenting an extensive art project. Diary entries, sketchbook drawings, photographs, overpainted photographs, large-format plein air painting on canvas right through to a podium discussion and coverage of the exhibition’s reception culminate in this self-contained artist’s book.beauty The design concept therefore goes way beyond that of a standard documentation: by outlining rather than simply juxtaposing the very different phases of the enterprise it has successfully transformed the process-driven nature of the project into a durable medium —that of a book —thereby alternating between glossy and matt materials, between coarse and fine typography, between colour and monochrome. You can really be persuaded you are feeling temperature, air and earth, indeed the whole atmosphere of what is taking place on the book’s images. Yet the question keeps coming back: is such a thing —imparted atmosphere —actually possible? This book offers an opportunity to examine just this possibility. Perhaps it is through its atmosphere that the reader may gain an inkling of the original subject matter. If this is the case, then the credit belongs to its design concept.

Dieses Buch erscheint als Konvolut, das ein umfassendes Kunstprojekt dokumentiert. Tagebucheintragungen, Zeichnungen im Skizzenbuch, Fotografien, übermalte Fotografien, großformatige Pleinairmalerei auf Leinwand bis zu Podiumsgespräch und Rezeption der Ausstellung kulminieren zu einem eigenständigen Künstlerbuch. Die Gestaltung geht also weit über eine ordentliche Dokumentation hinaus: Nicht zusammenwürfelnd, sondern die sehr verschiedenen Projektphasen nachzeichnend ist es ihr gelungen, im Wechsel von glänzenden mit matten Materialien, im Wechsel von kruder mit feiner Typografie und im Wechsel von Farbe mit Monochromie das Prozesshafte des Projektes in ein beständiges Medium, das Buch, zu transformieren. Man glaubt, Temperatur, Luft und Erde zu spüren, ja die ganze Atmosphäre dessen, was sich auf den Bildern abspielt. Aber immer wieder muss man sich fragen: Kann es so etwas überhaupt geben: vermittelte Atmosphäre? Mit diesem Buch hält man eine Möglichkeit in der Hand, dies zu studieren. Vielleicht ist es die Atmosphäre des Buches, durch die man eine Ahnung von der Sache selbst bekommt. Dies wäre dann das Verdienst der Gestaltung.
