about the foundation
For more than 50 years, Stiftung Buchkunst has been promoting the exemplary design of commercial books and providing them with a highly regarded forum through three important competitions - »The Best German Book Design«, »Sponsorship Prize for Young Book Design« and »Best Book Design from all over the World«. The results of these design competitions set points of reference and track new developments. They serve as impulses for outstanding design and exemplary workmanship.
Stiftung Buchkunst critically monitors German book production. At the center of that is the book as an object of everyday use. »The Best German Book Designs« - exemplary in design, conception and workmanship - are awarded every year by an independent jury.
The »Sponsorship Prize for Young Book Design« is awarded to encourage innovative book design and new ideas about the printed book. The large number of young prize winners underlines the competition's openness to innovation, without losing touch with the long book tradition.
The competition »Best Book Design from all over the World« offers the opportunity to observe and record international developments and national differences in book design. Of the entries from over 30 countries, a total of 14 works will be honored by the international jury. The focus here is on international exchange and mutual stimulation.
The collection of the »The Best German Book Design«, of the »Best Book Design from all over the World« and the three winning titles of the sponsorship award as well as the short and long lists will be exhibited at the book fairs in Frankfurt and Leipzig. The award-winning books can also be seen in bookstores, libraries and universities, as well as at trade fairs and design events in Germany and abroad. The collection of one year can be borrowed for exhibition purposes. If you are interested in borrowing one of the collections, feel free to contact us.
