New Surface Research is a highly conceptual book in which content, binding, production, design and layout combine superbly to create a compelling work. Brussels-based artist Henri Jacobs has been engaged in an investigation of two-dimensionality, the inherently flat nature and recto-verso proposition of a surface. Taking various forms such as woven paintings, murals, brickwork, wall hangings, ceramic objects and drawings, the works presented in this book were produced using a variety of techniques. In particular, Jacobs regularly experiments with woven paper, plaiting old and new pieces – or figurative and geometric images – into a double-sided, two-dimensional surface that is image, pattern, texture and structure all in one.

The sensible binding lends the book an appropriate structure and complements the content, creating a pattern that gives a gentle nod to the art contained within. The chosen material is reminiscent of textiles, thus harmonising with the layout’s well thought-out and harmonious overall concept, while the carefully designed index is presented in an easily accessible fold-out on the inside cover. New Surface Research is a finely crafted volume that successfully captures the essence of its content via a simple yet effective design. The book’s high-quality production and structure make it a joy to explore.
