Everything Is a Projection is a meticulously crafted collection that delves into the intricate world of computer graphics and virtual reality. During the pandemic, artist and researcher Sheung Yiu began digitising everything on the desk at his home, where he remained confined for the duration of lockdown. He created 3D models of 81 objects and added texture detail using a computer graphics technique known as projective texturing. In this way, he transformed his physical desktop into a three-dimensional digital world, turning his data set into an archaeological site of his everyday life. The result is an intimate but also strangely generic space, unmoored from its fixed position, beyond the boundaries of walls, distributed across time and space.

The artist’s multiphase and conceptually complex process is presented via a well-considered brevity and elegant graphic techniques. The precise descriptions and exceptional production quality make Everything Is a Projection irresistibly engaging, compelling readers to keep exploring its pages,
with the table of contents on the spine providing an intriguing detail. The choice of materials and printing ink means the book no longer simply frames the work, instead becoming the work’s very means of existence. The combination of silver printing ink and sheer, uncoated, high-bulk paper creates a dissonance that references the virtual – a feature that, like the understated narrative climax, is particularly pleasing. In all, this is a truly cohesive design object.
