Auf glänzendem Hardcover-Umschlag und in kräftiger Neonfarbe zieht eine wandernde Grille die Blicke auf sich. Mit diesem famosen Auftakt entführt Comiczeichnerin und Illustratorin Anna Haifisch in eine Welt voller ungewöhnlicher Perspektiven, unterschiedlicher Erzählstile und Rhythmenwechsel. Mal sind es Comicsequenzen, die der Geschichte Tempo geben, mal sind es fast schon illustrative Wimmelbilder, die eine szenische Gesamtschau bieten. So folgt man zu gerne einer Grille, die sich in einer alten Geige einnistet und nachts alle Insekten und Mäuse der Umgebung mit ihrem Spiel erfreut. Mit viel Bildwitz, wie etwa dem Einblick in eine „Kürbisbar“, in der Motten ihren Abend verbringen, entspinnt sich eine fantasievolle Geschichte, die vom Zusammenhalt in schweren Zeiten erzählt und natürlich ein Happyend bereithält. „Die Story ist zum Verlieben“, notierte die Jury. „Das Farbkonzept ist genial und die Illustrationen sind absolut überzeugend.“ Auch für die stimmige Schriftwahl – die Axo Book von Abyme – gab es großes Lob.
Es ist das erste Kinderbuch der gefeierten Künstlerin Anna Haifisch, die ihr mitreißendes erzählerisches Talent auch in diesem Genre bravourös unter Beweis stellt. Mit einfacher Linienführung und leuchtenden Farbkontrasten kreiert sie nicht nur Atmosphären, sondern zeichnet auch Charaktere und Gefühlswelten ihrer tierischen Figuren ebenso treffsicher wie humorvoll. Der illustrierte Vor- und Nachsatz rahmen dabei die Erzählung stimmig ein und unterstreichen die Sorgfalt, mit der dieses Buch bis ins Detail gestaltet wurde. So findet die Grille letztlich nicht nur in der Geschichte, sondern sicherlich auch in vielen Kinderzimmern ein schmuckes Zuhause.

Sometimes comic sequences quicken the story’s pace; at other times, larger illustrations reminiscent of hidden-object pictures give us a wider view of a scene. Through it all, we keenly follow the adventures of said cricket, who moves into an old violin and delights the local insects and mice with her night-time playing. Drawn with great wit – take, for instance, the “pumpkin bar” where the moths hang out in the evenings – it’s an imaginative tale that depicts a community coming together in difficult times; naturally, it’s also one that has a happy ending. “The story is a joy”, commented our judges. “The palette is fantastic, and the illustrations are thoroughly compelling.” There was also praise for the well-chosen font, Axo Book by Abyme.
In what is her first children’s book, the acclaimed cartoonist and illustrator Anna Haifisch has given us further evidence of her exceptional storytelling talent. Her simple lines and bold colour contrasts combine to create vivid atmospheres, while the personalities and feelings of her animal protagonists are drawn with authenticity and humour. There are also illustrated endpapers front and back that perfectly complement the story, an example of the great attention to detail that went into this book’s design.
Just as the cricket finds a home in a musical instrument, the book itself is sure to find a home in many a youngster’s bedroom.
