Das Buch als Objekt: Mit 720 Seiten und einer außergewöhnlichen Haptik beeindruckt dieses Verzeichnis von PoD-Publikationen schon alleine aufgrund seiner physischen Präsenz. Das fein geriffelte Softcover greift bereits das stringente Raster des Innenteils auf und zweiteilt damit sowohl den dynamischen Farbverlauf als auch den Ton-in-Ton gedruckten Titel. Ein leuchtendes Entree für die Auseinandersetzung mit den analog-digitalen Hybriden einer neuen Subkultur, in der die Buchproduktion zwar demokratisiert wird, die Buchgestaltung jedoch plattformabhängigen Grenzen unterliegt. Annette Gilbert und Andreas Bülhoff untersuchten mit Gast-Autor*innen diese Form des Publizierens und kartierten akribisch PoD-Bücher weltweit.

Das konsequente Gestaltungskonzept unterteilt dabei die Seiten in variable Tabellen und schafft so den Spagat zwischen formaler Strenge und spielerischem Layout. Die Text- und Informationsfülle unterliegt somit einer klaren Struktur, während die Titelnamen der vorgestellten Publikationen in großen gelben Lettern als weitere Ebene über den bibliophilen Angaben zu schweben scheinen.
Insbesondere die großzügigen Kapitelaufmacher mit ihrem gelben Farbverlauf als stetige Referenz zum Umschlag gefielen der Jury. Sie lobte zudem die feinfühlig eingebetteten Essays sowie den ebenfalls tabellarisch angelegten Anhang. Ein inhaltlich wie formal zeitgemäßer Band, der auch buchbinderisch zu überzeugen weiß.

The finely ribbed soft cover echoes the strict grid of the inside pages, splitting the vibrant gradation and tone-on-tone title down the middle. It’s a striking way to kick off this exploration of a novel publishing subgenre that, while it democratises book production, also forces book design to submit to platform-related rules. Together with guest contributors, the book’s authors Annette Gilbert and Andreas Bülhoff set out to explore the resulting analogue-digital hybrids and meticulously map the global PoD landscape.
Their Library of Artistic Print on Demand is “a fabulous survey of the field, the design of which aptly reflects the book’s subject matter and archive character. With its pared-down approach, appealing mix of fonts and, last but not least, fantastic format, it succeeds in creating a book that makes you want to get reading”, our judges declared. By dividing the pages into varying tables, the consistent design concept manages to balance formal rigour and a playful aesthetic. The wealth of text and information is thus underpinned by a clear structure, while the large yellow lettering used for the names of the featured publications adds another layer that seems to elevate them from the bibliographic details.
The judges particularly liked the generous chapter openers, which offer a recurring echo of the cover design, and praised the thoughtfully integrated essays and the appendix, which also comes in table format. This is a thoroughly contemporary work in both subject and design, and a book that’s exceptionally well bound.
