Pixel is one robot among many, and while his fellow robots tighten screws, assemble things or give weather forecasts, his task is to paint. Suddenly, Pixel starts to enjoy his work, wielding his brush with glee and losing himself in the forms and colours. After he’s brought back into line by the control team and given additional support units, Pixel finds himself directing other robotic painters. He ends up not only with a great many pictures to admire but also with a special assignment of his own, courtesy of an encounter with a strange being.
Printed in three colours, this delightful story is told by Reto Crameri, whose artwork combines two very different styles of illustration. The robot protagonists are thus rendered via vector graphics that lend them an appropriately technical look, while the world around them is depicted via sweeping lines created using various painting techniques. The overprinted spot colours also add a particular charm.
This blend of technological precision and human touch, of graphic rigour and painterly line, was a big hit with our judges. “Format, binding, palette, typography – everything adds up to a thoroughly harmonious whole”, they observed. “Then there’s the extremely well-chosen paper, the finely textured cover material and the attractive endpapers.” In addition, refined details – such as the way the barcode is integrated into the back-cover design – underline its creator’s commitment to great book design.
By the end, young readers will be crossing their fingers that Pixel is able to complete the task and paint his dreams. After all, anything is conceivable with the imagination of a child...
